Protein: Is More Better?

From slamming cans of tuna mid-conversation to protein powder crusted chicken breast - people are finding increasingly odd ways to supplement their protein intake. However, the question remains - just how much protein do we actually need?

Protein is one of the core macronutrients that make up our daily diet. It’s important to eat enough protein daily to maintain the health of your muscles and your internal organs. Protein can be found in foods such as meat, dairy, and fish. Protein can also be supplemented with powders, bars, and drinks!

Protein is the most filling macronutrient - with studies showing that participants feel the most full after a high protein meal. This can assist with fat loss as eating protein can reduce cravings and feelings of hunger. Furthermore, extra protein is more likely to be used to build muscle or be used as energy. This means the human body is not likely to store protein as body fat.

The absolute minimum amount of protein recommended for the general population is 0.75 grams of protein per kilogram body weight per day for women, and 0.84g/kg/day for men. However, this is the bare minimum to keep all of your bodily functions in order. Research has shown that a high protein intake is significantly beneficial for the general population.

Studies have shown that eating between 1.3-1.8 grams of protein per kilogram body weight per day is the optimal dose for muscle protein synthesis. This applies for sedentary individuals, endurance athletes, and strength athletes. This is beneficial for building muscle and muscle recovery. This shows us that everyone can benefit from this higher intake of protein!
