This is an honest look at what actually changes when you take creatine, over what timeframe, and how much of the early "before and after" is real muscle versus water. There are no transformation promises here and no guaranteed outcomes, just what the format is and is not.

What results can you expect from creatine?

Creatine supports strength, power and training volume, which over time can help you build muscle. In the first weeks the most noticeable change is a small rise in scale weight, and that early weight is mostly water drawn into your muscle cells, not fat and not new muscle.

Genuine lean mass gains accrue over months, and only alongside consistent resistance training and adequate protein. Results vary between people and are never guaranteed.

Two kinds of results

It helps to separate two different things people mean by "results":

  • Performance results. More reps in reserve, a little more power, and quicker recovery between hard sets. These show up first, once your muscle stores are full.
  • Body composition results. A visible change in how much muscle you carry. This is slow. It comes from the training you do while supported by creatine and adequate protein, not from the creatine on its own.

How long does creatine take to work?

Creatine works in two timelines. Your muscle creatine stores fill, or saturate, over roughly 3 to 4 weeks of daily supplementation at a maintenance dose (Kreider et al., 2017), or faster if you use a loading phase.

Once stores are full you may notice more reps, better power and quicker recovery between sets. Visible changes in how you look take much longer, developing over months of training rather than days. Timing the dose barely matters; daily consistency is what fills the stores.

Two ways to fill your stores

Two common ways to reach full stores:

  • Maintenance only. Take a steady daily dose, commonly cited as 3 to 5 grams of creatine monohydrate (Kreider et al., 2017), every day. Stores fill gradually and reach the same end point, just more slowly.
  • Loading then maintenance. A short higher-intake phase of about 20 grams a day, split into four 5 gram doses for 5 to 7 days (Kreider et al., 2017), fills stores faster, then you drop to the maintenance dose. Either way, the honest headline is this: performance support arrives in weeks, a visible "after" photo is a months-long project driven by training, not by the supplement.

Does creatine make you look bigger?

Creatine can make your muscles look slightly fuller, because it draws water into the muscle cell, an effect called cell volumisation. This is water held inside the muscle, not fat gain and not permanent new tissue, so the fuller look can appear within the first weeks.

How noticeable it is varies a lot from person to person, and some people see very little change. Any lasting size comes from the muscle you build through training over months.

Why the scale moves early

Because the early change is intracellular water, a few things follow:

  • The scale may rise slightly in the first weeks. This is water inside the muscle, not body fat (Antonio et al., 2021).
  • The fuller look is not the same as gaining muscle, and it can be subtle or barely visible on some people.

What happens when you stop taking creatine?

When you stop taking creatine, your muscle stores gradually return to their natural baseline over about 4 to 6 weeks (Kreider et al., 2017), and the extra water your muscles were holding comes back down, so you may see a small drop in scale weight.

This is not muscle loss. The lean muscle you built through training and eating enough protein stays, although you lose creatine's support for strength and training volume until you start again.

What to expect after you stop:

  • Scale weight. A small decrease as intracellular water returns to baseline. The number that dropped is roughly the water number that went on at the start.
  • Muscle. The muscle you built through training does not disappear because you stopped a supplement. You keep training results by continuing to train and eat enough protein.
  • Performance. You lose the extra support for high-intensity output and may find the last reps a little harder. Restarting refills your stores again over the same kind of timeframe.

There is no rebound penalty and no need to cycle creatine for it to keep working. Stopping simply returns you to your unsupplemented baseline.

Setting honest expectations

A realistic creatine before and after is not a dramatic overnight transformation. In plain terms: a small early rise on the scale that is mostly water, a slightly fuller look for some people, better output in the gym once stores are full, and then slow muscle gains over months that come from the training itself.
