What is TUDCA?
TUDCA stands for tauroursodeoxycholic acid. It is a bile acid, which is a type of compound your body uses to help digest fats. Your body makes small amounts of it naturally, and it is also produced as a supplement, usually sold in capsules.
How it relates to bile acids
Bile acids are made in the liver, stored in the gallbladder, and released into the gut to help you break down and absorb fats (LiverTox, NIH). TUDCA is a taurine-conjugated form of ursodeoxycholic acid, another bile acid (Kusaczuk, 2019). Because it sits within this bile-acid family, most of the interest in TUDCA centres on the liver and the digestive system.

Is TUDCA safe or does it have side effects?
